In a new Shoutem version, we have a feature called badges. What are badges, one could ask? Badges are “rewards” for the most active members in a certain Shoutem network. This way we encourage users to use our location-based networks even more. There are 13 badges available to earn, and in this post we are going to present you all of them.

greenhorn Users will receive their GreenHorn badge for their first check in. This one is simple to get.

showoffTo receive a Showoff badge, users will have to visit 10 different places. No more sitting in a room, now users have to walk around.

Users will be able to earn these badges using our mobile applications (iPhone, Blackberry, Android in a next couple of months) and a web interface. To prevent cheating, we decided not to support a web check-in, so users will be able to earn their “check-in” badges only if they use their mobile phones to access Shoutem networks.

Administrators can also change the names of these badges, and their description in their admin page. Just go to Settings –> Languages –> and edit your language.

      At this moment, ShoutEm hosts more than 10000 microblogging networks. With 18 pre-defined styles it’s easy for every network creator to have his/her microblogging network to look just the way he/she wants. But, some network creators want to be special, and edit pre-defined skins to have even nicer look of their network.

      Today, we want to give credit to 5 network administrators who invested some time and made great designs for their networks. Of course, one could disagree with our choice (if you do, please post your favorites in the comments), but this is our choice of 5 the most beautiful microblogging networks created on ShoutEm, in alphabetic order.

      1. CaribTweet is network for Caribbean Tweeters. It has nice Caribbean-style design, with a beach, sea and palms as the background. In these cold winter days, it makes us want to be somewhere warmer.

      2. HorseTweet provides a one stop shop for equine enthusiast to find events and news! It also provides the tools to find and befriend equines in your local area that share your particular brand of horsemanship from Rodeo to Dressage! It is the only network in this list with a dark theme, but we all have to agree; it’s great!

      3. Kukurooku is simple micro-blogging service you can use to share “what’s happening” with family and friends using text, photos & videos. Its design is mixture of two colors: yellow and blue, with a beautiful background image.

      4. TruthSmack is a running journal of everything that is true. If you know something to be true, share it with the world here. The site features a nice blue theme, with some light colors and a cool logo.

      5. TwitCasas is the best place to find all the houses. It features a smooth light theme with readable text and a beautiful blue and green background. A nice example of how sometimes simple designs work best, at least when it comes to microblogging.

      Shout'Em in Plan B Magazine

      The launch campaign for Shout’Em, that landed us on Mashable, The Next Web, Profy, Techcrunch and other blogs, has been featured as one of 101 great marketing ideas by Croatian pop culture magazine Plan B.

      They say:

      …Shout’Em generated a lot of buzz in a short timeframe among early adoptors – users who are the ones that first try out web services and new technologies. Not only did users create over 1000 networks, but they also provided helpful feedback at the very start of the project… What can we say? If you ever need a viral campaign, these guys know how to make it happen!

      Thanks to Plan B for the feature! We promise to do even more good marketing in the future. Other ideas in the article include:

      • Podravka’s Coolinarika cooking community;
      • Citroen’s CSI (Citroen Super Intelligence) parody TV ads;
      • Aviokarte.hr guerilla campaign.

      So, you like Shout’Em and your users are shouting all the time. However, you want to integrate it with your site even more. Well, for those using Ning networks, it just got that much easier.

      What is Ning?

      While Shout’Em lets you create your own microblogging network similar to Twitter or the now defunct Pownce, Ning lets you create your social network (think Myspace). While Ning has lots of neat features, it does unfortunately lack microblogging. This is where Shout’Em comes in – with widgets!

      Do I have to be an administrator of the network?

      No, certainly not. While we let admins add their Shout’Em networks as full pledged parts of the network, users can add the Shout’Em application for Ning themselves (to their profile) and load their message streams. So let’s get to it:

      For admins – How to add Shout’Em to your network

      • Select the Manage tab;
      • In “Your network” settings click on Features;
      • Select Text box from the available features and drag it to your layout;
      • Go to your Shout’Em network and click on Widgets in the footer;
      • Copy the code from the “For Ning admins” option;
      • Locate the Text box you added on your network and click Add Text or Edit;
      • Paste in the code and save;
      • You’re done – Howly Shout’Em Batman! Good job!
